Divide 5280 feet into 39 foot segment and you have your answer....

There is space to absorb some of that through the many fishplates that would be required, each having a tiny amount of stretch and give, which allows for expansion and contraction without kinking or breaking.

But, I've seen many more broken rails from contraction, than kinking in hot weather, due to cold night time winter temperatures, down on the sun baked SP. I seen instances where the rail can be pulled up to 6 or 8 inches apart. I took a "hot" train over one break of only about 4 inches, once at Myoma. You have to go very slowly and be gentle handling the slack....so you're not "bouncing" the cars over it.
