Just as compressing air heats so expanding air cools it. You have the problem of expanding air
through an orifice (valve opening etc) that the cooling affect can easily freeze any entrained or
free water causing a freeze up. Constant problem in winter and as noted a good reason for some
form of air dryer. Most standard filters do some of this by velocity separation where the water
is thrown away from the air stream by a directed baffle and is collected in the bowl of the filter
to be manually or automatically drained and of course an included hissing noise.
