Descriptive Grammar vs. Prescreptive Grammar

Linguistics 101:
Prescriptive grammar is what your crotchety English teacher tried to instill into you.
Descriptive grammar is when linguists study and describe how people actually use language.
So the "misuse" of apostrophes may be wrong, but the usage indicates that this is very much part of our language.
