And so on. What you're talking about is the way languages evolve, which is quite natural. For example, try reading Chaucer's Canterbury tales, written between 1387 - 1400, and compare them to Shakespeare, who was writing some 200 years later. Chaucer's English is barely comprehensible today; Shakespeare is much more readily understandable. What happened is that the first English dictionaries were compiled contemporaneously to Shakespeare, and they tended to slow down the rate of language change enough so that now, some 400 years afterwards, twice the amount of separation in time between Chaucer and Shakespeare, we can still read his writings with a reasonable level of comprehension.

This business about "pic's" being possessive and "pics" being plural isn't about the language per se ("pics", "pic's", and "pix" all sound precisely the same when vocalized), but about the signposts used to interpret the language when written -- the punctuation marks. Thus, "pix" may have become an acceptable plural of "pic", particularly on internet forums (and never mind "pic" vs "picture"), but when you start fiddling with the signposts which guide you through the written language, its like taking down stop signs at busy intersections.
