What would differ with a genset in terms of MU capability? One would presume that they would MU with any other matching locomotive up to whatever the normal limit on numbers of units is.

FWIW, when I lived in SLO in the early 1970s, it wasn't unusual to see 6 or more units on freights heading for or coming off of Cuesta, even on relatively short trains (maybe up to 40-50 cars). All working.
