On several different trips from the East to the Bay Area, I made a point of going to Oakland to do the following:

Walk the street used by the ex-WP line through Oakland and check out the ex-WP depot

Photograph Amtrak and UP trains running on the ex-SP street running line through Oakland

Ride Amtrak to the Jack London Square Station and walk over to the ferry terminal for a very pleasant crossing to San Francisco.

Yes, Oakland, like other cities, has its challenges, but to liken Oakland as the "worst Cancer [sic] known to man" is absurd.
