About 35 years ago I was involved in an effort to utilize excess reefer capacity from the east coast back to the west. At that time rates were in the neighborhood of $5000 a load east with nearly all the cars traveling back west empty. A rete in the $1500 range was being considered. One possible product was concentrated orange juice arriving at east coast ports from Brazil. Wit consistency of very thick syrup, the thought was to pump it into large food-grade bladders that would lay on the car floor. I left the company before the first test shipment but later heard the bag blew out the plug doors during humping.
