When I was at TRAC my wife and I were caught up detouring around the big mudslide. Many TRAC members expressed anger at Amtrak for annulling the Starlight. I wrote to Amtrak's president and encouraged him to keep the service annulled because passengers on the Starlight had every right to expect "first class" service and if Amtrak knew they couldn't deliver then they sould not offer a second rate experience. I still feel that way today.
