Based on what I've seen (American River bridge approach when the homeless burned it down) and heard about, I suspect that by the time we finish chewing on the subject here UP will have the bridge half rebuilt. Even if it has to be replaced, it won't take long. It is, after all, a main line and UP will want it open soon. The headline on an earlier post below - Amtrak cancelled for 2 weeks - might be about the time it will take to have a permanent repair done.
Wonder how much traffic really does have to be rerouted? While it's a main line, the "I-5" route probably isn't in the traffic class of Donner Pass, for instance. UP says 3-4 days delay for shipments, but for how many?
