The OP asked about steam, I assume then not now. 3751 ran last scheduled passenger train on Santa Fe in Aug 1953.

Double track San Diego depot to old town was set up to allow turning of trains on the wye.

SD&AE (both SP & KYLE) used the turntable to correct TOFC cars that came in backwards from the east.
