The geology of the West side of the Columbia River Gorge, in the Central Washington area, only allows a few options. The BNSF ( ex-GN) crossing at Rock Island is the easiest RR crossing, though Trinidad Hill to the East is still a substantial pull. Interstate 90 up Vantage Hill is 4 - 5%. Once BNSF crunches the numbers of all the available options, I can predict rebuilding the Milwaukee R of W,( after reacquiring title from the various current owners), will be far behind such projects as double - tracking portions of Stevens Pass & the ex - SP&S line along the Lower Columbia River between Pasco & Vancouver, WA.
