When the price of copper got really high, GE tried to use aluminum high voltage cables instead of copper ones. It was a dismal failure as the aluminum couldn't withstand the heat and cool cycles that take place under heavy loads and would often burn in two when under high loads. Also, aluminum wire expands and contracts severely and would loosen in connectors on traction motors and relays. Made for some neat light shows at night when pulling coal trains.
