When operating the train from Virginia City to Carson City and back the crew is instructed to take water at Carson City(Mound House)only as necessary. The water is not nearly as pure as that available in Virginia City. Virginia City uses snow melt that is piped from the Sierra Nevada where Mound House is "brackish" well water.
