By far the worst weather condition I've ever dealt with, in 30 + years of Commercial Truck Driving. Worse than wind, rain, snow, even ice. That being said, I've never driven in a white - out blizzard, though Tule Fog has to rank right up there in terms of not being able to see a damn thing. Really fun too with temps right around freezing; the Interstate 5 bridges around Tracy would frost over from the fog in the air. My brother - in - law got rear - ended in his own driveway in Sacramento by a scared motorist following his taillights.
Many nights heading North from Irvine to Kettleman City, I-5 would be clear at 11PM, but by the time I did my meet & turn and headed back South that damn fog literally grew up from the wet ground. It was like driving into a wet wool blanket !!! Fog lights were worthless ( you turn them on and sure enough it gets foggy ); some of the Willig & Crescent drivers would even shut off their headlights and shine their spotlight on the center line !!! You knew the fog was bad when the Willig Happy Faces turned into frowns !!! The CB radio was every truckers' friend now, with drivers calling out slow rollers and on - ramp traffic. Many a STOOPID car driver ( we called them all 4 - wheelers, any car or light truck ) would drive like hell to the next big truck, then sit next to it to use the extra headlights. I had to move a few 4 - wheelers out into the median when I would suddenly run up onto a scared 4 - wheeler running maybe 25 MPH on I - 5 or Hwy. 99 !!! I suppose the newer LED taillights on all vehicles help a bit, but I don't miss that damned Tule Fog one bit.
