Western Pacific was still sending Oroville yard clerks to call crews at the motels right up to the UP merger. Crews from Stockton and Portola stayed in a pair of motels across the street from one another, neither of which had direct-dial phones. During hours when the motel offices were unstaffed, they would come knock on your door. If you weren't there, they would drive around town looking for you.
