How can I know where a freight car started and is going to end?

Let's say I'm at Cajon Pass and I spot a box car with reporting marks "ABCX 12345"... What are the ways to know where it's going and where it started and what it's carrying and if it's loaded or empty?

Does this work in Canada as well?
