Yes, Hell's Canyon. Deeper than the Grand Canyon, impassable even today unless you're on a specia;luzed jet boat or raft, and frightfully rugged on both shores. One of the reasons the Snake was called that "accursed mad river." A railroad along this stretch would have really been a railroad to hell -- and about as likely!
