How about this one: The D&RGW once followed the Gunnison River from Gunnison to Cimarron and then again from Delta to Grand Junction, with a climb over Cerro Summit and a stretch along the Uncompahgre River in between. Obviously, this was done to avoid the most difficult part of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Granted, most of this line was torn up long ago.
