Bakersfield then (1984) vs. now

Ebay photo below shot from Beale Ave overpass, looking east. Date says 1984.

Looks like one or two GP's to the far left - maybe for locals? Looks like an active caboose track at this date too.

Looking at Google satellite view of this spot (link), I see the turntable and servicing tracks are there.
However the old shop buildings, the white tank and the yard tower are all gone.
I wonder why they needed a tower here anyway?
