SMART owns the track from Schellville (?) to Ignacio even though its trains will not run over that stretch. The train is painfully slow over the California Northern (10 MPH?), faster over SMART. The train itself is quite impressive. Essentially two Capitol Corridor consists tail to tail with a locomotive on each end. The train unloads/boards right across the highway from the main gate. Two years ago the train made two spots on arrival at the track. Once to unload ADA passengers, then pulled forward to unload everyone else. That's about ten cars of passengers out one door and over a ramp across the ditch. I think last year a second ramp was set up so a bit more efficient. Once a large group of passengers has gathered, CHP stops vehicular traffic to allow safe crossing. The train lays over right there during the race. Brazos always has a good group of watchers and photographers, especially in the morning. Aside from race traffic, the train itself jams everything up at Schellville, a long slow train crossing the highway twice. Hopefully at some point in the future SMART will run its own trains from Sonoma County to the track. Highway 37 is to be avoided all morning and again after 3:00 on race day.
