A few years ago, the Arizona Department of Transportation studied the entire out of service area and determined it would cost an average of 1 million dollars a mile to rehab the line. Most of that average cost is for bridgework.

Union Pacific has not officially abandoned the trackage because of the various rumors that pop up now and then. Most of the freight that comes into Phoenix is destined for the west valley but there is not that much freight coming into Phoenix from the west coast. Most of the freight that comes into Phoenix from the west comes from West Colton on the QWCTU and then comes to Phoenix on the LKK10, LKT72 and the MTUPX with freight that comes in from the east. If needed UP will run the MWCPC but that is rare.

The City of Buckeye has installed signs (for sale/lease/will build to suit)at 2 different proposed rail served industrial parks but there are no takers from any business yet.
