Source(s) in lieu of Ballast Quarries

As a sidebar, the huge CF&I steel mill in Pueblo, Colorado produced a considerable quantity of slag, which stretches south of the plant for a couple miles, like an artificial hogback. Seems to me there was some experimentation with using the slag for ballast years ago. Was it successful? How about any similar attempts with mine tailings?
