Wilburton Tunnel removal, Bellevue Washington

Considerable publicity for the last several weeks; but haven't seen any mention of it's reason for existence.

When the present Southbound lanes of Interstate 5 were added, some years ago, the Wilburton Sub was temporarily moved, the tunnel built in an open ditch, backfilled, track returned to normal, and the freeway lanes built.

Now that the Wilburton Sub is O/S from Bellevue to Boeing Renton, WSDOT is removing the tunnel - allowing more freeway lanes.

The steel bridge over I 90 will go next. A favorite for graffitti. (had west-side walkway)

Then the Wilburton trestle. Cherish the Spirit of Washington and Boeing 737 fuselage photos.

Sonjia Krishnan's story in The Seattle Times includes photo of contractor's tractor mounted concrete breakers and backhoes.
