Who can predict the future but IMHO the EU will fracture. Just getting the core of the western Roman Empire - Italy, France, Germany and Iberia - to function more or less as a unit is a real challenge. Hell, Italy is not even much unified.
The EU should have remained the core EC and let the balkans, etc. go their own way.
