No major passenger railroad worldwide makes money if you truly account for all the costs involved. That having been said, passenger railroads offer many values that don't showup on the ledger sheet. Passenger railroads reduce pollution, traffic and improve public safety. If only we could find a way to put a dollar value on the positives, then maybe the bean counters will get off of Amtrak's back.
