This is the skipper. Ginger please look up "Operation Life Saver" and this will answer all of you concerns about being safe around trains.
Trains for one are not cars, not trucks and not school buses.
Trains do not have a steering wheel and cannot avoid a car which has driven into it path.
the stopping distance of a train going 55 MPH is 1 Mile. Weight of the train 10,000 tons. The weight difference between a car and a train is like comparing a soda can with a train, there is none.
Smelly not really. I live less than 100 feet from an active rail line in Redondo Beach. Noise very little for maybe 30 seconds.
