Back in the late 60's early 70's the Milwaukee Road had no regard for their crews. We came east on train 254 from Portage,WI to Milwaukee with a lot of way work in route. 254 usually consisted of three or four covered wagon type loco's with about 100 or so freight cars. We worked 16 hrs and died on the old West Allis main line around Hy 100 overpass. As this line was not used west of West Allis except for re-route or detour moves off the double track main at Elm Grove the Carrier let us rot there for two days after we had expired. As you can well imagine the Unions had a field day with these time claims including our missed round trip do to us still being on our inbound train. It took three years and a number of time claims to even get our proper pay for the entire days earned.
