Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) is seriously (?) discussing buying the old SP right of way and restoring the tracks - their trains have been delayed far too often by UP. Whether this is smoke and mirrors is up for debate but they seem to have some $$$ to throw at the idea. My guess is that they'll pay UP for some additional and lengthened sidings - the old SP route was engineered in the 1870s with 30 mph speeds at best.
