In the 70s SP was not very friendly to railfans--a station agent chased me off the passenger platform in Berkeley telling me I wasn't allowed to take pix of SP trains. I retreated to the public sidewalk.

Fast forward, when Ross Rowland got the AFT project going, GM and Pepsi were some of the corporate sponsors. At the time GM was SP's largest single customer--10+/_ % of carloadings. SP "got with the program" and calls to #1 Market St elicited helpful information as to location and scheduling of the AFT. I don't know which "major shippers" might be the ones to get UP to smarten up, but I do believe, that action by them and/or major institutional stockholders are likely the key.
