The old rails should give back their benefits? And you said you work for the railroad? What in the hell do think the retired rails got for you during the time when they worked 30-40 plus years? Oh, and 16 hours a day!
Well kid, I won't take up this space to explain why you think this way but you should read up on it. I remember when we had to give up 1 hour picking up or setting out a unit. Our initial and terminal delay. Also an hour supplying an engine before a trip. They used to have big glass bottles, about 2 1/2 gallons and they were never clean. You had to chip the ice in the ice house to cool it in the stand in the cab. The carriers were pleading they were almost broke. Oh a lot of carriers had their own hospitals and medical departments. In the early 70's they "gave" that to the unions. The unions were not in the business to run that kind of situation. They did that so they could bail themselves out and dump it. Up to then, they had to provide employees medical care as part of past contracts. Everything has gone backwards since then.
Look back to the history of railroad unions. The BLE was the first union in the USA and it was called the "Brotherhood Of The Foot Board" The BLE and other unions wanted to establish a pensison plan. This was before the SSA was even thought of. We didn't trust the carriers to hold the money so we asked the feds to watch over it. Thus was born Railroad Retirement. We paid in more so we had something to live on, if we lived that long. (A railroad man could not get insurance because of his profession.
Who do you think got you the Boiler Safety Act telling the railroad they had to supply a safe place to work. Before then, if you got hurt, they would fire you. If you were killed, too bad for the wife and family.
Kid, with a statement like that, you wouldn't make a pimple on a hogheads ass.
