Sometime in spring 1955 I recall the Daylight catching up to us between Byron and Tracy. Much to our surprise a 1700, 2-6-0 "Valley Mallet" had the whole thing in tow at track speed. They must have scrounged Port Costa and Matinez for anything to bring the train to Tracy after some kind of problem. It was quite a thrill at the time and all my Dad could do to keep up with it past Grant Line Road into Tracy. How times have changed!
