What if the City returned

With Amtrak routes up for grabs I was thinking. What if a common carrier decided to re-enter the passenger business. Could they make money, with the elimination of Amtrak, good equipment and only operating the service (outsourcing the hotel functions).

They could operate the service just like Amtrak as extra trains and relieve themselves of regulations surrounding the Amtrak service, and all the provisions of Amtrak's contracts.
