Bob2 has hit on what is the root of the problem. We as a country have to re-examine our economic policy. If a railroad electrifies their line the investment in physical plant is enormous and will not be helped by short term investors. We have to stop thinking of investments as something to buy on Monday and sell the following Wednesday. The fate that the real estate market suffered is an example of short term investment gone too far. People are no longer thinking of buying a house where they want to live but how fast can they realize a profit.
An investment in electrification is a very long term proposition. Electric locomotives are expensive. They have a fewer maintenance intensive moving parts. They have a broader power band and develop full rated horsepower at a standing start. They have the potential for a ZERO carbon footprint. Long term, they are a better investment.
The NIMBYs' will complain about the visual impact of overhead wire on the environment, quite possibly the endangerment of some bird or worm due to the magnetic fields generated by the electricity. When did we become so short sighted?
Just a thought. Want to see how powerful an electric locomotive can be? Google PRR FF-1. Affectionately known as "Big Liz" . Bear in mind that that was done with 1917 technology.
