BART-MTC are the schoolyard bullies, notorious for stealing smaller transit ops' lunch money.
The only reason MTC under Heminger is funding SMART is as a putative placeholder for broad gauge. But seems like things are changing maybe just a little bit. The Bechtelians have finally died out and I see some indication from the maintenance side of the BARThauptbunker that the younger and smarter staff recognize BARTtech is total white elephant.
Plus I doubt you could lay on 10 cattlecar BART trains on the GG Bridge whereas light rail could do it. I am figuring BART rolling stock will trend to heavier as they cram on more equipment and more standees and I assume bicycles. Plus if they ever do crush some of the beercans good the FTA will put on pressure for more structural strength, viz. more weight.
Besides PBCAHSR(like Caltrain)are truly evolving into a supra-BART commute line - in fact 3 new ones: SJART, FART, and PART. BART stands as idiosyncratic ghetto mierda by comparison.
