Thanks for putting up the links. I remembered the figure but had no memory of which plan from which year. Idid remember it was "reprogrammed" to cover a BART cost overrun (vendor greed). Funny how the money moves around. In the same time period BART covered another cost gap by deciding not to buy enough new cars to staff the SFO extension. Some tame consultyant or maybe staffger wrote astudy saying thatjust improving maintenance wouldinvent enough extra cars each day to cover the extra train hours. In fairness, ordering 28 cars of acompletely unique design (correct me if I got the # wrong) would have been a royal ripoff, because no builder would have been able to do a tiny order like that at a decent price per unit. That said,we may be better off merely suffering car shortages until skidoo delivers the goods, but I do not commute in normal rush hours so my POV is skewed.
