Last I heard the balloon was still in. We took many a car around it. They may need smaller power but we did it with GP-9s, GP-35s, etc. They could lube the outside rails if the are rusty.
East Garrision just had a couple of dead end spurs, Trk 2639 & 2637. (we would drop cars in on the east peddler)
Camp Roberts still had Trk. 2670 that was the Large Balloon, and US Army Small Balloon Trk.2671 and a bunch of spurs. Large Ramp,#2673, small ramp,#2675, Army #3, Army No.#2 and the Scrap track, #2678
All the SP did was take out the connection from No. 2 siding, Trk 2660 in the early 70s. Then They put it back in and up graded the Xings and equipment.
My guess its a wet behind the ear officer that doesn't know any better. Sure, it may take different power and a SWITCH CREW THAT KNOWS HOW, but then again, Uncle Sam is paying the freight for the move. Humm, Up needs the dough???
