I very much like you thinking and agree the train could easily have been easily reoriented long before getting to Camp Roberts.
However if you would look at the photos I posted and read what I said;
The train originated on Metrolink (Oceanside). Was assembled by WAMX. It's actually a BNSF train, inspected by their Carmen.
Why it was routed as it was is a mystery to me. If run straight Oceanside to Camp Roberts I 'assume' it would have been oriented right.
