Those detours are possible if there was a special reason to do that. But it's definitely not economical.

Installing the missing connection between the Fresno Sub and Oakland Sub is a priority for UP, as it will allow them to shift traffic off the Martinez Sub and go over the Altamont instead.

That would open up more slots for Capitol Corridors, and any potential ACE trains going from Modesto/Merced to San Jose.
