Communities along the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) Trail see a lot of benefit. The GAP links Pittsburgh, PA with Cumberland, MD and by connecting to the C & O Canal, Washington, DC.
Railfans with more than two brain cells in their head will also understand that portions of this trail afford new railfanning and photography opportunities in industrial communities southeast of Pittsburgh.
They also know that the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad which follows a portion of the trail near Cumberland can generate additional riders with bicyclists riding one way and the train in the opposite direction.
Likewise, bicyclists can bike the GAP in one direction and ride the
Capitol Limited (with a baggage equipped for hauling bicycles) in the other direction.
