Attention photographers and Rare Mileage collectors:

Amtrak No. 5 will detour over the former Western Pacific Route and thru the Feather River Canyon on Sunday August 24. This happens a a couple of times each year account of derailments on Donner Pass, but is now happening account of scheduled maintence by the Union Pacific on the former SP route over Donner Pass. What makes this detour so special is the fact that Trains Unlimited, Tours will have 3 original historic California Zephyr cars coupled to the rear of No. 5 which will give the apparence that this is Train No. 17 operated by the Westeren Pacific in the early 1970's..

The last time 3 CZ streamline cars ran all coupled together thru the Feather River Canyon was on March 22, 1970 when the last No. 17, the original California Zephyer departed from Portola and headed down the Feather River Canyon towards Oroville and on to Oakland marking the end to a very famous train, called "The Most Popular Train in the Contry"

The private cars that will be on the rear of NO. 5 will be:

SILVER SOLARIUM: CZ VISTA DOME-LOUNGE-SLEEPER-REAR END OBSERVATION
SILVER LARIAT: CZ VISTA DOME COACH
SILVER RAPIDS: CZ SLEEPER

TUT will run these three cars eastbound on no. 6 via Donner Pass on Friday August 22 with a group getting off at Sparks to take part in the 26th Annual Portola Railroad Days Festival being help in Portola on Saturday August 23.

There is still some space available if anyone is interested in riding on these three historic private rail cars eastbound over Donner Pass via the former Southern Pacific Route and then westbound thru the Feather River Canyon on the former Western Pacific Route.
