My fuzzy recollection was the new bi-levels had to survive 800,000lbs of force and in testing failed at a fraction below that, which led to the suspension of the project.
Or you know, we could just implement better safety systems, like PTC, and have fewer collisions, like in Europe and Japan.
Higher sill heights will slow boarding, be less accessible, reduce capacity (especially at stations with shorter platforms), and won't be compatible with the existing bi-level fleet due to different end-door heights. Sucks to be us.
One potential upside? If the sill height is close enough, a single-level equipped Amtrak California Coast Daylight might be able to use the high-level platforms that are probably coming to Caltrain. Anyone know the status of that plan?
