… with crumple zones… And they actually work, if you look at the pictures of the recent accident in Austria (collision between a new Westbahn KISS and a freight train hauled by a Vectron. Spped of impact unknown, must have been at around 50 km/h or so.
The cab was protected, and the driver was diagnosed "medium injuries". The equipment area behind the cab pretty damaged. But the passenger compartment remained a) upright and b) pretty much intact.
The pictures do look frightening, but the damage occurred where no human life got seriously harmed (because nobody is supposed to be in the equipment area).
I do not even want to think how a Metrolink cab car by Hyunday Rotem had behaved in that situation…
