The collision was not purely frontal, but right corner to right corner. It seems that the end car got stuck on a wagon (and not the locomotive), which then made the carbody bend. It is possible that the carbody got slightly bent by the impact with the locomotive, however, which then weakened it.
As far as I am aware, the area where the carbody bent is another energy dissipation zone by design. And, yes, I think that the second batch of the Westbahn KISSes has the newest design.
Again, it must be considered very positive that the passenger compartment did not get structural damage, and that the cab did not get crushed.
