Here in Southern California, that is not true. 100+ mile rides do occur with some regularity: LAX to Santa Barbra, LAX to Palm Springs, Downtown LA to San Diego county, LB to Santa Barbra, etc. Now, not all drivers will accept a ride like that as there is no guarantee of getting a ride match back. But they do happen.
