Where to start.
Mine would be in the late 50s racing a Mallet from Hope Ranch to Goleta, in the back of my grandfathers pickup. The first time I saw a "Weird" looking engine at the water plug in Santa Barb, no taking water. (Diesel)
Going to Walnut Grower meetings with my grandfather at the Goleta depot. I went next door and pestered the agent (Al Singleton) on what did this mean, listing to orders, etc. He taught me a lot but I didn't know it at the time.
Then some 10 to 15 years later, I was an fireman/engineer on the Coast/Western, going by the same depot at 79 mph between SLO & Santa Barb.
Those were the good old days of railroading. The old heads taught you well and you were still learning 40 years later.
