The most common gear ratio is 62/15 meaning a 62 tooth bull gear on the axle and a 15 tooth pinion on the motor giving a 4.13 : 1 gear reduction...or in other words the motor turns 4.13 times for every revolution of the wheel.

Other gear ratios are used; older switchers had a 65 / 12 which was used for low speed yard work so the motors could revolve faster for additional cooling. These are EMD figures; GE uses other ratios.

Many locomotive trucks will have the gear ratio stencilled on the side frame so as to be sure to get the right ratio in event a wheelset needs to be changed.
