DC traction motors have brushes. There are normally 4 sets of brushes that rub on the com end of the motor. These energise the windings in the armature to oppose the 4 field coils in the motor housing. The com end is idintified by the inspection covers (opened and brushes checked every 90 days) and the rubber boot for cooling air to pass through. The grear ratios are necessary so that armature RPM is not exceeded. Excessive centrifical force will rip a motor apart, causing a bird-cage and even locking up the motor.

AC motor have no brushes so no maintanance.
