PCC cars also have their motors at right angles to the axles.

The general term for the gear needed to turn the corner is a bevel gear. Hypoid is a special type of bevel gear which is used to reduce vibration - their teeth are always in mesh (i.e. the next tooth contacts its mate before the previous tooth loses contact), while a straight-cut bevel gear has a bit of vibration each time a new tooth contacts its corresponding gear.
