Is this Siemens concept similar to the Milwaukee's Bi-Polars with the armature directly mounted on the exle? I have often wondered why such wasn't tried on diesels in the past. From what I remember, the Bi-Polars were very easy on the track compared to standard traction motors and despite the "centipede" drive wheel configuration (e.g. verticle play), simple to maintain, fast....but could not be MU'ed and of course did not like wading through water over the tracks.

Was the lack of MU capability a factor of the direct axle mounting or just a quirk in the locomotive builder's design?
