Re: Elko and Winnemucca Amtrak Station Location Questions

I was in Elko and Winnemucca last March just prior to Winterail. The Elko station(s) are located on the WP track south and a little east of downtown where the SP station used to be. As stated the SP track went right through the center of town with many grade crossings and casino parking lots stradling the ROW. The relocated SP ROW followed the WP alignment through town.
The current Elko station is like commuter train platforms with fences and gates to keep people off the track. A sign posted says the conductor will open the gate when safe to do so so people can board the train. I tried it anyway and the gate was damaged enough by locals that it would not lock. You had to go to the north side for westbounds and the south side for eastbounds (or is it the other way around?). If you're on the wrong track when the train arrives you're in trouble. You have to drive around using an overpass that's about 1/2 mile west of the stations. If I recall the signs clearly state which side you need to be on for east or west bound trains.
Also as stated there is no Winnemucca station any more on the WP track through there. Physically the two lines are between 1/2 and one mile apart. The Amtrak stop on the SP line is at the same location that the SP station used to be. Now its an Amshack.
